Research and Special Engagement Awards

A powerhouse is nothing without engines or without energy to make them run. The Ifo Institute, one of Europe's major economic research powerhouses, and the Society for the Promotion of Economic Research (Friends of the Ifo Institute) awarded distinctions to some of the Institute's best research "engines" and to those whose extraordinary engagement provided the energy to keep things running at peak performance.

The awards were presented by Roland Berger, chairman of the Friends of the Ifo Institute, Heinrich W. Ursprung, deputy chairman of the Ifo Scientific Advisory Council, and Hans-Werner Sinn, President of the Ifo Institute.

The awardees this year were:

Peter Egger, for the oustanding quality and output of his empirical research, in particular for his article "On the Welfare Effects of Trade and Investment Liberalization", published in the European Economic Review journal, and to Mario Larch and Michael Pfaffermayr, for their contributions to this article.                                               

In addition, prizes were awarded for outstanding success in the management of contract studies, in particular, for work on a major research contract of recognised quality content, containing international country comparisons, and completed within the time and budget allotted.

This year's awardeess were Steffen Henzel, Oliver Hülsewig, Johannes Mayr, Wolfgang Meister, Wolfgang Nierhaus, Monika Ruschinski, Dirk Ulbricht and Timo Wollmershäuser, for the project Joint Economic Forecast

and Sabine Engelmann, Michaela Fuchs, Beate Henschel, Joachim Ragnitz und Heinz Schmalholz for the project The State of the Economy of the East German Länder in an International Comparison of Production Locations

Special prizes were also awarded to those who contributed with their engagement to the extraordinary research performance of the Institute over the years. The awardees were Hedwig Lindner, for her decades-long excellent management of the Ifo President's office; Rüdiger Parsche, for his outstanding work in public finance, in particular his expert reports on tax systems and communal revenue sharing; and Hans Günter Russ, for his outstanding work in economic surveys, in particular for his co-ordination of the Ifo Business Survey and his contributions to the Ifo Branchen-Dialog conference series.
