Like what you see?

Looks and Luck

Of course when I choose a person looks don't matter! It's what the person stands for what counts. Her competence. Really? Ehem. Don't mean to prick your self-esteem bubble, but chances are the last time you voted the candidate's looks more than her outlook drove your decision. Or her luck. Or both. But that depends on your electoral system, as new CESifo research shows.

Here's the cure for the green warts

13 Theses on Germany's Energy Transformation

"To boldly go where no man has gone before". Star Trek? No: Germany's push to turn its back on conventional and nuclear power and embrace renewables for all its energy needs. And Hans-Werner Sinn, as well: he boldly goes where no man has gone before, at least not so articulately, in enumerating all the warts on Germany's beautiful green façade.

Ifo Business Climate Index Still Sliding

The missiles being lobbed in Ukraine, Israel and elsewhere are not only shooting down hopes for peace, but the confidence of German business as well: the Ifo Business Climate Index fell for the third month in a row in July. It seems like each month adds a new crisis to the menu. Assessments of the current business situation were less favourable and optimism about future business developments cooled off.

Now where is that blasted keyhole

Clockwork Germany

Germany is on a roll. Not only it bagged the world football cup, it also appears economically immune to the various crises in its backyard and beyond, its output and financial solidity eliciting grudging admiration in many quarters. Too good to last?

Grey New World

The usual thing is that as you grow older, you grow richer. But, when it comes to countries, usually when they grow richer, they grow older. And that will play havoc with the finances of most of the rich world, with their ability to innovate, and with their voting patterns. See how your country is doing in the Oldie League.

  Out to trap your weekend

The Euro Trap

The long wait is over. The new book by Hans-Werner Sinn is out. It started as an English-language version of his German best-seller Die Target-Falle, but ended up being something quite different. Thoroughly updated and with new insights, it is set to become the work of reference on the genesis, evolution and aftermath of the euro crisis.

CESifo at EEA-ESEM 2014

After its very well-received reception in Gothenburg last year, CESifo will once again welcome its "family" for a bit of shoulder-rubbing during the European Economic Association Annual Congress, to be held in Toulouse in the latter part of August. The place: Centre Méridional de l’Architecture et de la Ville. Drop by.

Our CESifo Programme Director, Prof. Oliver Falck, will become the new Director of the Ifo Centre for Industrial Organisation, New Technologies and Innovation, starting in October. He will stay with CESifo, though. God bless his little soul.

EU Should Couple Short-Term Sanctions against Russia with Long-Term Integration Policy

Ifo's analysis of past experiences with economic sanctions, published in ifo Schnelldienst 14/2014, suggests that there is little prospect of achieving a lasting de-escalation of the situation in Eastern Ukraine by implementing further sanctions against Russia.
