What Could Possibly Go Wrong
It all looked so promising. Signing Association Agreements between the EU and a number of countries emerging from the former Soviet empire would boost these countries' economies, curb corruption and improve governance and the rule of law, while offering new markets for EU products. But then Putin put his foot down and what could have been a mere choosing between two different economic blocs is tearing Ukraine apart. A new CESifo study asks whether the so-called Eastern Partnership can and should be saved. Sobering reading.

Careful What You Let In
Despite bogus scares such as chlorinated chicken or antibiotic-infused beef, both the US and the EU stand to gain from the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership currently being negotiated. But be careful about opening the door to unwanted side-effects, warns Hans-Werner Sinn.

Funny World
Sizing countries according to their idiosyncrasies or partiality towards given issues can lead to really strange-looking maps. A wealth of such maps is already out there, produced with solid scientific methods. We indulged in a bit of very unscientific fun to create a couple of maps on topics on which attitudes vary widely across countries. Brave new worlds indeed.

Inflows of Foreign Population
Foreigners at the gates are almost always sure to raise hackles among the locals, even when their country would do well to let many more of them in. Scare stories abound, of newcomers elbowing the natives aside in the job market, abusing welfare and, in short, of being simply too many. A common grumble is why do we have to take in so much more of the huddled masses than, well, everyone else? But, how do countries really compare in terms of letting foreigners in? Check it out.
