As societies age they become less inventive. That much seems to be borne out by empirics. But it's not that straightforward. As it turns out, as societies age, a spurt of innovation occurs in the early stages. It is only later in the ageing curve that innovation begins to slacken, as a new CESifo study shows.

The View from Afar
All Germans, nay, all Swedes and sundry other denizens of prosperous, stable places should spend at least half a year abroad, ideally somewhere, well, less prosperous and less stable. This way they would realize what an extraordinary privilege it is to call their remarkably well-functioning countries home. (And tone down the griping in the process.) Therefore, granting this privilege to newcomers should be a bit less—undemanding. A view of Germany from afar, from your footloose Editor.

CESifo Area Conference on Global Economy
On 13 - 14 May 2016, CESifo will hold its annual meeting for the Global Economy research area, intended to allow presentation of current research undertaken by its members and to stimulate interaction and co-operation between area members. Papers can be on any topic under the Global Economy field, covering trade, international finance, migration, global environmental issues, and others. The keynote speech will be delivered by Peter Neary.
