Opportunity versus Necessity Entrepreneurship
It would seem likely that business creation is boosted in economic upswings when chances and opportunities for entrepreneurs are good. Looking back at events during the Great Recession, however, surprisingly reveals a countercyclical pattern. According to network members Luigi Bonatti and Andrea Fracasso, Università di Trento, there is no quick-fix solution. ifo World Economic Climate Improves Considerably
The ifo World Economic Climate has improved considerably. The indicator rose in the first quarter of 2018 from 17.1 to 26.0 points, soaring to its highest level since autumn 2007. Experts assessed the current economic situation far more positively than last quarter. Their economic expectations also showed an exceptional improvement. The worldwide upswing consolidated in the first quarter.

ifo Business Climate Index
Germany’s very favourable business climate cooled down considerably this month. The ifo Business Climate Index fell to 115.4 points in February from 117.6 points in January. Companies were less satisfied with their current business situation, but the indicator was at its second highest level since 1991. After the euphoria of recent months, companies’ assessments of the business outlook for the months ahead were also far less optimistic.

This year's European Economic Advisory Group report focuses on the symptoms and possible cures of the current integration malaise. While economic conditions and outlook are benign at present, economic and migration crises and Britain’s decision to exit the EU pose a strong challenge to the previous path of ever closer union and bold enlargement in Europe.
 
CESifo Economic Studies, Volume 63, Issue 4
The latest issue of CESifo Economic Studies focuses on “Climate Change and Migration”. Nine excellent contributions cover the whole spectrum of the research agenda in this field. Highlights include the two editor’s choice articles on inter-state migration in India and a study on whether natural hazards cause international migration. These are available online.
 
ifo DICE Report 4/2017: Determinants of Populist Voting
Recent years have been characterised by the rise of populist voting including Brexit and the election of Donald Trump as US president, to name just a few examples. The articles featured in the Forum section of the latest ifo DICE Report aim to provide insights that facilitate a deeper understanding of the rise of populist voting. Richard Musgrave Lecture 2018 with Michael P. Devereux
The 2018 Richard Musgrave Visiting Professorship has been awarded to Professor Michael P. Devereux. Michael Devereux is Director of the Oxford University Centre for Business Taxation and Professor and Associate Dean for Faculty at the Saïd Business School at Oxford University. As part of his guest professorship, Michael Devereux will give the 10th Richard Musgrave Lecture entitled "Taxing Profit in a Global Economy" on 12 April 2018 in the Kleine Aula of the University of Munich.
 
CESifo Area Conference on Global Economy
The annual meeting of the Global Economy Area of the CESifo research network will provide a forum for network members to present their latest research and will stimulate interaction and co-operation between area members. Papers may be submitted on any topic in the Global Economy field covering trade, international finance, migration, global environmental issues, and other issues. The keynote lectures will be delivered by Thomas Chaney (Sciences Po, Paris) and Jonathan Eaton (The Pennsylvania State University).  Doctoral Positions as Researcher and Teaching Assistants at the Munich Graduate School of Economics
The Munich Graduate School of Economics (MGSE) is the umbrella organization for graduate education at LMU Munich’s Faculty of Economics and coordinates the application process for various institutions and research programs. Successful candidates, who pursue their doctoral studies at the MGSE, are provided with an advanced training for in-depth research in economics. The doctoral program has a strong focus on the application of state-of-the-art methods. It combines demanding course work and an early start of individual research. Positions offer comprehensive supervising and mentoring schemes, excellent international contacts, and access to an outstanding research infrastructure from one of Europe’s top 10 universities. The application period is from 15 December 2017 to 3 April 2018. In general, positions and courses start in October 2018.  6th International Symposium on Environment and Energy Finance Issues (ISEFI-2018)
The 6th International Symposium on Environment and Energy Finance Issues (ISEFI-2018), jointly organized by the IPAG Center for Energy Economics and Environment ( IPAG Business School) with the support of the  International Association for Energy Economics, will take place on 24-25 May 2018 in Paris, France. It aims to provide academics, policymakers, and practitioners with a valuable forum for discussion and critical analysis of the major issues and challenges that interrelate energy, environment, macroeconomics and financial markets.   13th Tinbergen Institute Conference, 2018 on: International Trade and Development
This summer, the 13th Tinbergen Institute Conference will be held on International Trade and Development at the Tinbergen Institute in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. The TI conference is held every year but on different topics. Previous editions of the conference have included researchers at many different stages in their careers. The atmosphere is informal and lively, characterized by significant audience participation. Keynote speakers will be Robin Burgess (London School of Economics, United Kingdom) and Dave Donaldson (MIT, United State). For more information have a look at the  call for papers.
