FEATURED PAPER

UK’s Brexit Bill
Some months ago we presented a paper investigating who voted for Brexit to better understand how the Leave vote actually happened. A recent CESifo Working Paper contributes to the debate by analysing the economic consequences, i.e. the costs of Brexit, and coming up with a reliable method for estimating the potential Brexit bill. Both a summary and the full working paper are available online.

A Trumpian Turn in EU Trade Politics and the Silence of Germany
As of 2018, this newsletter will feature a new rubric presenting the latest research output from the EconPol Europe network. The latest  EconPol Opinion takes a closer look at reforming the EU’s trade defence instruments and how a political agreement was reached. Surprisingly, Germany’s voice did not resound in the debate. Does this position signal a new and worrying stance towards free trade? Find out more on EconPol’s  website.

Tax Credits in the US
Self-employed workers in the US adjust their income if government welfare and aid programmes provide incentives to do so. Although some make this adjustment legally by working longer or shorter hours, other self-employed workers choose to illegally misreport their income. Follow the link to find out more about the study conducted by ifo researcher Andreas Peichl and co-authors.
ECONOMIC INDICATORS
ifo Business Climate Index Rises
Sentiment among German businesses was very strong going into the year. The ifo Business Climate Index rose to 117.6 points in January from 117.2 points in December. This was due to far better assessments of the current business situation, with the sub-indicator hitting a record high. Business expectations for the next six months, by contrast, were slightly scaled back, but remain at a high level. The German economy made a dynamic start to the year.

University of Aberdeen launches new MSc in Law & Economics of Oil and Gas
Managing oil and gas exploration takes place in a complex environment: regulation and taxation by governments play an important role. The oil price is also influenced by various factors including demand from China, unconventional supply from the US and other political events. The MSc in Law & Economics of Oil and Gas explains how to deal with this environment: contracting between states and commercial actors, how to understand the global crude oil market, licensing, upstream taxation, environmental regulation, decision-making criteria and the role of uncertainty. In short, this unique programme offers both a legal and an economic perspective on the industry. Students benefit from the expertise of experts in both the Business School and the Law School. All information about this MSc can be found  here.
