Honours for Ifo Staff

The start of the year brought good news for two of Ifo's researchers. Gabriel Felbermayr, Director of the Ifo Center for International Economics, was appointed a member of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy’s Scientific Advisory Council.
Meanwhile, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) awarded Ifo President Clemens Fuest an honorary doctorate.

Ifo Business Climate Index Falls

Sentiment among German managers weakened in January. The Ifo Business Climate Index fell to 109.8 points this month from 111.0 points in December. Companies expressed greater satisfaction with their current business situation, but are less optimistic about their six-month business outlook. The German economy made a less confident start to the year.

Good-looking politicians tend to win more votes! That is the main message of a recent study by Panu Poutvaara, Director of the Ifo Center for International Institutional Comparisons and Migration Research, and his co-authors published in the Journal of Public Economics. Forthcoming Events
The Economics of Digitization

The 1st doctoral workshop on the economics of digitization will take place on 12-13 May 2017 at CESifo in Munich. This workshop will bring together doctoral students doing research in the field of the Economics of Digitization and will have both a theoretical and an empirical focus. The keynote speaker will be Tommaso Valletti. The workshop is a joint initiative of CESifo Group Munich, Liege Competition and Innovation Institute, Telecom ParisTech and the Toulouse School of Economics.


 IIPF Doctoral School at CESifo

The fourth IIPF Doctoral School will take place on 23-25 May 2017 at CESifo / Ifo Institute in Munich, Germany. Uwe Sunde (University of Munich) and Matteo Cervellati (University of Bologna) will give lectures on the "Dynamics of Inequality". Learn more about the event here.

In memory of Sir Anthony B. Atkinson (1944-2017)

At the beginning of the year the sad news reached us that Tony Atkinson had passed away on 1 January 2017. Atkinson had close links to the CESifo Group. In 1995 he was made a CES Distinguished Fellow. Ifo President Clemens Fuest looks back on the life of an influential economist.

 2017 IIPF Annual Congress
The 73rd Annual Congress of the International Institute of Public Finance will be held in Tokyo, Japan, on 18-20 August 2017. The theme of the keynote speeches and panels will be "Fiscal Reform". Papers contributed on any topic within the field of Public Economics and related disciplines will be considered, as is traditional at IIPF congresses. Both practitioners and academics are invited to participate. For further information on this event, take a look at the information flyer and the Call for Papers, or check out the congress website.

 Application to the Munich Graduate School of Economics
The MGSE provides advanced training for in-depth research in economics. The MGSE's Ph.D. program offers comprehensive supervising and mentoring schemes, excellent international contacts, and access to an outstanding research infrastructure from one of Europe's' top 10 Universities. The duration of the programme is 36 months. In general, the positions and courses start in October 2017. The deadline for applications is 31 March 2017. Fluency in German is not required for admission. You may find further info on the application procedure, financial issues, formal requirements and much more here.
